Yes — you can absolutely rent a hall without using a venue's caterer. Whether that's an option depends on the specific venue. Knowing the difference before you book can save thousands of dollars.
What Is a BYOF Venue?
A BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) venue lets you bring your own food, hire any caterer you want, or arrange food however you like — without paying the venue a per-person catering fee. This is the opposite of a mandatory-catering venue, which requires you to use their in-house kitchen or an approved vendor list. Most hotel ballrooms and many banquet halls in LA operate on mandatory catering models — it's how they generate revenue beyond the room rental.
How Much Does Mandatory Catering Cost?
- Per-person food minimum: $30–$65 per guest at South Bay / LA venues
- 150 guests: $4,500–$9,750 in food alone, before service charges
- Service charge / gratuity: 22–26% on top of catering total
- Required bar package: $8–$15 per person additional at some venues
On a 150-person quinceañera, mandatory catering can add $6,000–$14,000 versus bringing your own food.
SBDC BYOF Policy — FAQ
Can I hire my own caterer?
Yes, completely. You can hire any caterer you want, bring family-made food, order from a restaurant, or combine approaches. No approved vendor lists, no outside catering fees.
Can I bring my own alcohol?
Yes. A responsible adult or hired bartender handles service. No corkage fee, no bar package requirement. Our security addresses any underage drinking.
Is there a kitchen?
SBDC has kitchen facilities for food prep and warmup, so your caterer can work on-site rather than arriving with fully plated food.
What's included in the base rental?
Tables, chairs, security guard, and post-event cleaning are included. A refundable security deposit is required — returned after your event in the vast majority of cases.
What types of events does SBDC host?
Quinceañeras, wedding receptions, baptisms, birthday parties, retirement celebrations, corporate events, and community gatherings. Family occasions only — no club-style events.
Can I set up the night before?
Yes, by arrangement. Early setup is one of the most valuable features for large celebrations — it removes the morning-of rush entirely.
How far in advance should I book?
Summer Saturdays book 6–9 months in advance in the South Bay. Book as early as your date and guest count are confirmed.
